FOUNDER
Dempsey's World Record Associates was founded by Edward J. Dempsey, a successful businessman, accomplished race driver, and inventor. Originally from Chicago, Dempsey moved to California in 1945. He studied for dual degrees at Occidental College and Cal Tech. Although family obligations interrupted his college career after three years, he continued his education through night and extension courses at Los Angeles City College and UCLA. Dempsey founded Concrete Coring Company in 1961, and over the years has developed several new techniques and equipment for the concrete cutting industry. He currently holds seven patents. His company completed an international diamond drilling job in 1986 that required cutting up the bottom of the Panama Canal. While overseeing business endeavors, Dempsey continued to indulge his life-long love for speed. He competed for five years in the Mobil Economy Run (1961-65), built a national champion factory experimental Plymouth for AHRA drag racing in 1964, won an NHRA B/Stock national title with an Oldsmobile in 1966 and ran a Plymouth Stock Car 195 mph at Bonneville in 1964. He also won an SCCA D Sedan National Championship in 1968 and a Formula One outboard motor racing championship in 1984. The multi-talented Dempsey also developed a new, powerful luxury car in 1986, which would have allowed Cadillac dealers to compete against Mercedes Benz and BMW. His company, CCC Engineering, was approved as an auto manufacturer by the EPA and the California Air Resources Board the following year. At the helm of DWRA, Dempsey has now turned his attention and considerable talents to the task of setting speed and endurance records with electric-powered vehicles, thus establishing an important new image for EV's as high performance transportation rather than golf carts. |
